A Dialogue with Cristina Acedo

“Childhood is when kid’s creativity bursts, their self-esteem is carved out, and they learn solving-problems procedures. Therefore, we need to let them fully live their childhood, let them be kids, and PLAY. It’s the key to succeed and to change the world.”

What inspires you? What is your main source of inspiration?

My inspiration comes from our everyday moments, our kids’ stories and our needs as a family. As the kids grow up, they need new spaces that I love to create according to their likes and interests, as the arts and crafts place, the reading corner or the playroom! The same with the home decoration, always trying to be practical for them but also harmonic and minimalistic. Finding the balance between their needs, our way to understand life and education and aesthetics is such a challenge it must be led by our passion for living in genuineness.

We introduced the kids to Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama and her dots, the kids’ love for animals and sticks from our walks by the river inspired the idea to decorate their room in the mountains.

Your favourite holiday destination? How do you create lasting memories with your family?

“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list” said someone. We love the mountains in La Cerdanya and the sea in Costa Brava. We enjoy nature a lot but we also love discovering new cultures and cities. We feel so lucky to live in Barcelona, a wonderful city with plenty of plans for everyone and also for the families. But I can remember our trip to Sweden and Copenhagen 2 years ago as a special one. It was during Christmas holidays and baby Valentina took her first steps there and not-so-baby-but- still-a-baby Pere met Santa at his enchanting house in Tivoli. We prepare and live family plans with such an excitement, that the kids feel enthusiastic with them and I hope this thrill will last forever in their memory. But I know for sure they will also remember simple everyday moments which mean everything to us, like the story time in the evenings, our dancing and singing crazy sessions or our neverending kisses before bed. Also, my Instagram diary will be there as a testimony of our days.

Do you read with your children? Do you think reading with your children is important?

Yes!!! We do read with the kids. We love books and illustration!! Reading at night, before bed time, it’s our favourite plan. I’m a Literature teacher and I enjoy reading with them and I feel so proud they can appreciate books and stories and even poetry as they do. Other times, we also invent our own stories and play some story-telling games or stage some theatre plays which enrich their imagination and vocabulary and allow us parents to know them better by listening to their plots and narrative.

What’s your philosophy on raising imaginative and creative children?

Talking to them. A lot. Listening to what they have to say. And giving them the tools to discover and express the world on their own. Communication, autonomy and eagerness.

Values you live by? Values that you wish your children to grow up with?

I’ve got a tattoo on my wrist which is like a life motto for me; some Shakespeare words: “Love all, trust a few and do wrong to none”. A very good overview, uh? As a mum, I try to educate my kids in respect and care about people and the environment, in reasoning and wondering, in emotional intelligence, in making the most of life time, in having curiosity…

Motherhood is…

Loving, playing, staring, trusting, daring, living, laughing, crying and creating bespoke hugs.

Childhood is…

Adulthood’s sparkle. Because childhood is when kid’s creativity bursts, their self-esteem is carved out, and they learn solving-problems procedures. Therefore, we need to let them fully live their childhood, let them be kids, and PLAY. It’s the key to succeed and to change the world.
